Thomas LaSorda, senior vice president of powertrain operations, said that Chrysler’s manufacturing arm would save $1 billion–about 10 percent of its manufacturing costs–from cuts in “operating structural costs.” He said the extra savings would come from reducing payments to suppliers and lower labor costs, but not from raw materials costs. Chrysler ordered a 5-percent across-the-board cut in supplier payments late last year and a 10-percent cut over the next two years.
